San Diego is credited as one of the birthplaces of skateboarding. The sport took hold there in the 1950s, serving as an alternative to surfing when there were no waves. Today, locals see the skateboard as “a logistical form of transportation but also a style accessory,” the photographer John Francis Peters, who has been living there on and off for five years, said.
Growing up, Mr. Peters would spend summers in San Diego, and Mone’t Panza, pictured above in Lincoln Park, reminded him of the people he observed and admired then. “Every single skater, whether it was a girl or guy, had a completely different style,” he said.
Mr. Peters saw Paulina Aguilar hanging out with friends in Chicano Park, a space covered in murals inspired by Mexican and Chicano heritage. “I want to express myself without any judgment,” Ms. Aguilar said of her personal style. “I know people are going to judge, regardless. So I’d rather dress however I want to dress.”
“My mom grew up in the ’80s generation, so I fell in love with that style,” said Victor Anderson in downtown San Diego. “I pretty much like to dress as casual as I can but still look like I’m a famous person.”
Ashley Carter said that being comfortable and honoring her Islamic faith are her top considerations when it comes to dress. “I really like a lot of colors,” she said. “I do wear outfits that are kind of loud sometimes, but I don’t try to match patterns or anything like that.” Mr. Peters noticed her in the city’s Clairemont community. “So I will put on a hijab with kittens on it, and jeans and a random shirt,” she said.
“I think California has influenced my style because of the weather,” said Bruna Stalliviere at a skate park in Ocean Beach. “The summer influences me to do a lot of things outside.”
Maharlika Bowlin, who wears a mix of new clothes and vintage, wants to stand out. “I want to be the person that people look to for a new trend,” she said, photographed in the Golden Hill neighborhood. “I like to mix it up a bit. Not all my clothes are items you can find in stores like Forever 21, Dear Alice or stores like that.”
Teal Grenney, left, and her mother, Yaisa Grenney, in the Barrio Logan neighborhood.
Lacey Bates grew up in the sleepy Lakeside area of San Diego, but she often went downtown to see people experimenting with their looks. “Being from a place where there’s not many people that dress like me, it makes me want to be different,” she said, photographed at Ocean Beach. Her fascination with eccentric style led her, in part, to a career in special effects makeup. “I’m really into horror, and I guess that could be a part of it, my dark side.”
Mr. Peters saw Lorenzo Donnell hanging out with this family in Skyline, a hilly neighborhood in southeastern San Diego. Mr. Donnell’s mother encouraged him to show the photographer his flip.
Chloe Kunkel at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
“None of my friends looked like me,” said Aileen Nham, photographed in the Golden Hill neighborhood. “Part of it was being in the Vietnamese culture, where I couldn’t look like this. So then when I turned 18, I just rebelled.”
From left, Minuet Huffman, Jessy Jane Condon, Autumn McDonald and Kailey Merritt at Ocean Beach near sunset. “When you grow up in San Diego, a lot of the partying and hanging out is done at the beach,” Mr. Peters said.
“I kind of just stood out where I was from, ’cause I was a punk little skater kid,” said Alyssa Fink, who was photographed at Ocean Beach, “I move out here, and everyone’s a punk little skater kid.”

Asanti Baltazar in Chicano Park.
Lacy Garth and Jordan Waite at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. “Basically be you, and San Diego will love you,” Mr. Waite said. “However you want to dress, you dress. However you want to look, you look. People accept you as long as you’re real.”
“San Diego is so diverse, there are so many cultures and so many different styles that it just kind of sticks with you,” said Jane Moreno, who identifies as Chicana, in Chicano Park. “What interested me about San Diego,” Mr. Peters said, “is that not only is it a Californian city but it’s also a border city, so it shares a very strong relationship to Tijuana.”
“Over here, you get a lot more psychedelic vibe,” David Perez said. “I see myself as a spiritual being, which is why I really love coming to Ocean Beach so much.”
“I don’t want to just wear a long shirt because men are going to look at me,” said Janice Castro, who was spotted in Chicano Park with her friends. “I want to be able to do whatever I want, and if they take it in a sexual way, then that’s their problem. I don’t want to hide myself for other people.”
“I just try to be exactly the opposite of what I don’t want to be, what I see wrong in society,” said Michael Anthony Zamora, who was spotted in Chula Vista.
